By invitation of the Council of Bishops, The Upper Room created an online prayer community in hopes of generating a groundswell of prayer for the 2016 General Conference held in Portland, Oregon. As a result, the 60 Days of Prayer book and website was offered as a way to pray with and for the delegates and to pray for God’s will and guidance. About 5,000 people joined the prayer community and have faithfully engaged in prayer for the mission of the church.   At General Conference, a resolution was passed asking the Council of Bishops to guide the denomination to “Find a Way Forward” – to engage the church in thoughtful, focused conversation on issues related to human sexuality.    The Council also named a parallel prayer initiative named “Praying our Way Forward.”  This prayer movement is hosted by UMCPrays.org and is guided by Bishops Debra Wallace-Padgett of North Alabama Conference and retired Bishop Al Gwinn, and supported by The Upper Room.

The Upper Room is a global ministry dedicated to supporting the spiritual formation of Christians seeking to know and experience God more fully. From its beginnings as a daily devotional guide, The Upper Room has grown to include publications, programs, prayer support, and other resources to help believers of all ages and denominations move to a deeper level of faith and service.
